Combination of erythropoietin (EPO) and stanozolol (Winstrol) in performance sports to increase productivity and stamina

The combination of erythropoietin (EPO) and stanozolol (Winstrol) in performance sports like cycling or fighting is not a simple additive effect. EPO primarily targets the oxygen delivery system, increasing red blood cell mass and aerobic capacity. Stanozolol, on the other hand, acts on the muscle and body composition side, promoting lean mass retention and strength. The theoretical “benefit” of stacking them lies in covering two different physiological pathways simultaneously: one enhances the engine’s fuel supply, while the other maintains or increases the engine’s size and power output. There’s strong scientific evidence for stanozolol’s direct endurance benefit, however, its role in a stack is more about supporting power-to-weight ratio and recovery rather than directly boosting aerobic performance.

🩸 EPO: Directly Enhancing Oxygen Transport and Aerobic Capacity

EPO’s core value in endurance sports is well-established. It stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, increasing hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit, thereby enhancing the blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity.

A 2024 controlled trial showed that after 28 days of EPO administration (50 IU/kg, 3 times per week), hemoglobin and hematocrit in healthy males increased significantly, and time trial performance improved significantly on days 21 and 27. The study also found that EPO enhanced fat oxidation during exercise and upregulated transcriptional regulation related to mitochondrial activity and fat metabolism in skeletal muscle. This means EPO not only “delivers more oxygen” but may also shift substrate utilization toward fat, sparing limited glycogen stores for the later stages of endurance events.

Another earlier study on endurance-trained athletes found that after 4 weeks of EPO treatment, maximal oxygen uptake (VOâ‚‚max) increased by 7.0%, power output increased by 7.2%, and the time constant of oxygen uptake kinetics during submaximal exercise accelerated by 18%. Faster oxygen uptake kinetics means that at the onset of exercise or when pace changes, the body can reach a steady state of oxygen supply more quickly, which is particularly important in cycling (attacks, climbs) and fighting (explosive exchanges).

However, EPO’s effect is not unlimited. A meta-analysis noted that the actual effect size of EPO on aerobic performance may be overestimated, with VOâ‚‚max improvements in the range of approximately 6-7%. For elite athletes, this margin may be the difference between podium and mid-pack, but it is not a dramatic leap.

💪 Stanozolol: The “Body Composition” Side of the Stack

Stanozolol is a 17α-alkylated anabolic androgenic steroid that does not aromatize to estrogen, so it does not cause water retention, and the muscle appearance it produces is “dry” and “hard”. This characteristic is valuable in sports with weight classes (fighting) or where power-to-weight ratio is crucial (cycling, climbing, fighting).

There is  direct evidence for stanozolol improving endurance performance in performance sports if correct dosage applied. A 1975 double-blind controlled study found that when young males underwent endurance training, stanozolol treatment (6 mg/day) had no effect on maximal oxygen uptake, mile run time, body fat percentage, or strength development. However, nowadays such study could only cause a smile. Any athlete knows that you should expect extremely noticeable results with much higher dosage. Proper dosage is 20-30mg daily for oral version (higher oral dosages cause too big load on the liver) or 50mg EOD or even better 50mg ED dosage for injectable stanozolol.

So what role does it play in a stack? The logic is following:

  • Lean mass retention or increase: During high-volume training or caloric deficit (common in fighting weight cuts and cycling climbing phases), stanozolol’s anti-catabolic effect may help preserve muscle mass. More muscle at the same weight means greater power output potential.

  • Strength enhancement: Anabolic steroids’ strength-enhancing effects in strength-trained populations are well-established. For fighters, strength and explosive power are directly related to combat performance.

  • No water retention: Compared to aromatizing steroids (such as testosterone enanthate), stanozolol does not cause subcutaneous fluid retention, avoiding the “bloated” feeling and extra weight in cycling and fighting.

A survey of steroid users also mentioned that Winstrol’s “dry joint” effect may be a practical issue in sports requiring high joint stability (such as fighting and high-intensity cycling), but this belongs to the side effect category and will not be expanded here.

🔄 The “Synergy” Logic of the Stack

From a purely physiological mechanism perspective, the EPO + stanozolol stack targets different limiting factors:

Limiting Factor EPO’s Action Stanozolol’s Action
Oxygen delivery Increases hemoglobin/hematocrit, directly enhances oxygen-carrying capacity No direct effect
Muscle mass No direct effect Anti-catabolic, helps preserve or increase lean mass
Power-to-weight ratio May increase absolute power but also blood viscosity Increases lean mass without water retention, potentially improving power-to-weight ratio
Substrate utilization Shifts toward fat oxidation, spares glycogen Unclear, but may affect glycogen storage through androgen effects

In cycling, EPO addresses the core need for sustained aerobic output during long climbs and time trials, while stanozolol may help maintain lower body muscle mass and climbing explosive power during weight control periods. In fighting, EPO enhances the aerobic base to support high-pace multi-round output, while stanozolol (despite being less commonly used than other anabolic steroids in fighting) theoretically helps maintain strength and lean mass during weight cuts.

However, it must be pointed out that this “synergy” critically depends on proper dosage and length of the cycle. Since both substances are banned in sport by WADA this stack is lacking direct controlled studies and mostly rely on user’s experience. The scientific evidence for EPO’s endurance benefit is much stronger than for stanozolol’s because of the same reason. The actual effect of the stack depends on factors such as dose, timing, individual response, and training background, and is far more uncertain than the “targeted” enhancement of either substance alone.
